Modern Nesting Dolls - Made By Joel · 10 February 2010

dusty talked joel into painting some nesting dolls and presented them to me today as an early valentine's/birthday gift. i happen to have a thing for nesting dolls, and it is especially cool to have a set hand-painted by joel. each doll is its own, individual work of art. i took a few pictures and made a little slide-show video so that you can see each piece. joel's also got a post up on his blog, showing some of the behind-the-scenes work that went into these.

dusty found a particularly good set of dolls for joel to paint. there are actually fifteen pieces altogether, the very smallest of which is rumored to be 1mm in size. joel was unable to open the second-to-last doll, though, so the very smallest piece remains forever locked away. we can pretend it's the doll's soul, perhaps.

the biggest doll is a bit bigger than a medium-sized egg. the last doll we were able to open, while not the smallest in the set, is nevertheless quite satisfactorily tiny.

as you can see, it's fairly dwarfed by a peppercorn (and a smallish peppercorn, at that). i'm not surprised joel couldn't prise it open. even if he had been able to open it to retrieve the smallest "doll", what on earth would he have painted on something reported to be 1mm in size?

to summarize: coolest gift ever.
